Working from a film made on Rathlin Island, I created a series of paintings from selected stills. Some of the shots were made from on board the boat that took us around the Island, just under the cliffs near Rathlin West Light. The title of the painting Still III (Rathlin, 55°17'47.0"N 6°17'05.0"W) identifies the precise location. The viewpoint is from on the water, looking up at the sheer cliff face. There is no view of the sky, and only a slice of ocean. In the film, where this cliff face appears, we can see the movement of the boat and hear the cacophony of seabirds. The boat and camera approach the land closely but there is no landing point, nowhere to arrive, no way to be still. The cliffs oppress and overshadow. The painting fixes one frame of the film and steadies the boat. Other stills from the film include two versions of Still I, (Kinramer Wood, Rathlin Island: I & II). The series is ongoing.
